Program Summary

The Local Network Lead (LNL) training program was developed to provide a sustainable pathway for grassroots researchers interested in championing open and reproducible research practices at their institutions and across the continent.

The main goal of the training program was to facilitate the establishment of local networks led by well-trained open and reproducible research champions in universities and research institutes. Applications were opened at the end of January 2024 with a one-month window which attracted over 100 applications from researchers in 21 African countries. The eligibility criteria was an affiliation with a research or higher education institution in Africa. No prior experience in open science advocacy was required.

71 researchers were admitted after an extensive review and the training begain in April. There was a total of 50 sessions led by global experts from our partners and several individual collaborators. The program concluded in October with 28 researchers from 15 countries in 4 African regions becoming Local Network Leads (LNLs) at their various institutions.

Structure

The training program was tiered with 3 levels; introductory, practical and advocacy/train-the-trainer. Trainees were required to meet a specific attendance and assignment completion percentage before being allowed to move on to the next level.

Local Networks
The program equipped several African researchers in establishing and leading local communities of practice at their institutions and support a continent wide push for the adoption of open and reproducible research principles and practices.
